Course Description

This mini-course kicks off the Solo PCT Way HIPAA Manual program.

In it, you will:

  • Download the materials
  • Decide where to put your HIPAA Security manual and forms
  • Add the first set of policies to your manual

This course has the most steps of all the courses, but is also one of the simplest. Get started whenever you’re ready!

This is not a continuing education course

Educational Objectives

  • Determine the learner’s best option for storing and editing their HIPAA Security Manual materials.
  • Install the materials in the learner’s desired format and workspace
  • Broadly describe the contents of the following manual chapters: Definitions, Language and Formatting, About The Practice’s Security Program, Risk Management, Business Associates, Passwords and Other Authentication

Syllabus

  1. Download the materials
  2. Decide the format you want to keep the materials in and where you want to keep them
  3. Explore the contents of your materials
  4. Add the Definitions chapter to your manual
  5. Add the Language and Formatting chapter to your manual
  6. What are some special considerations about your security program that help simplify it (as compared to larger practice entities)?
  7. Add the About The Practice’s Security Program chapter to your manual
  8. How does the Risk Management Policy effect the shape of your manual and the contents of your compliance documentation?
  9. Add the Risk Management chapter to your manual
  10. Add the Business Associates Program chapter to your manual
  11. How do we manage passwords effectively?
    • The importance of using password managers
  12. Add the Passwords and Other Authentication chapter to your manual
  13. How will future mini-courses be formatted?

Roy's FaceRoy Huggins, LPC NCC, is a counselor in private practice who also directs Person-Centered Tech. Roy worked as a professional Web developer for 7 years before changing paths and makes it his mission to grow clinicians’ understanding of the Internet and other electronic communications mediums for the future of our practices and our professions.

Roy is an adjunct instructor at the Portland State University Counseling program where he teaches Ethics and is a member of the Zur Institute advisory board. He has acted as a subject matter expert on HIPAA, security, and clinical use of technology for Counseling licensure boards, and both state and national mental health professional organizations. He has co-authored or authored 2 book chapters, and he routinely consults with mental health colleagues on ethical and practical issues surrounding tech in clinical practice. He served for 5 years on the board of the Oregon Mental Health Counselors Association and then the Oregon Counseling Association as the Technology Committee Chair.
