What?:Â A firewall is a special program that “guards the gate” where your computer connects with the Internet (and possible other networks.) It looks for suspicious comings and goings and tries to stop things that look wrong. For example, if there is a piece of malware on your computer that is trying to communicate with a home base of hackers, your firewall would be the software that notices this suspicious activity and tries to put the kibosh on it. What?: You can fit a whole room full of paper documents on a single thumb drive, if you do it right. And with the push to move to electronic documents going on, anyways, many people want to get rid of all that paper and just keep it all digital. The question is: does HIPAA allow us to destroy all that old paper?

What?: iPhones, iPads and Macintoshes all use a set of common apps such as for synchronizing your calendar, contact book, and many other useful things. By default, this synchronization happens through Apple’s iCloud service, which means that the information in those apps may get stored on Apple’s company computers. For clinicians, this could be a problem…
