Event: Heart-Centered Digital Ethics: Protecting Clients and Ourselves In 21st-Century Practice

A 6-hour ethics training for counselors, social workers and psychologists on keeping clients’ sensitive information safe, protecting therapeutic boundaries and relationships online, ethically managing your Web presence, and working towards HIPAA Security Rule and HITECH compliance.

Do you ever get confused about whether it’s safe to trade emails with a client, how best to send sensitive data, or take advantage of new technology effectively and ethically? Are you concerned about professional boundary collisions online? Do you want to know what you can ethically do about negative online reviews?

Heart-Centered Digital Ethics: Protecting Clients and Ourselves In 21st-Century Practice is a training for counselors, social workers and psychologists to get up to speed on the intersection of clinical practice and cyberspace.

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe security standards like encryption and when we need them in clinical practice — legally, ethically and practically.
  • Discover how we show up on the Web, where our ethical risks lie there, and strategies for dealing with them.
  • Make a security and privacy plan that takes the clinician’s time, energy and financial resources into account
  • Describe an Internet transmission and where risks to confidentiality lie in it.
  • Assess popular communications technologies for ethical, clinical and practical appropriateness for use with clients.
  • Use online resources without violating professional ethics or harming therapeutic relationships.
  • Incorporate client behaviors and beliefs around security/privacy into assessment and treatment.

21st-century tech has made our world transparent in ways that are changing our professions. Internet communication, social media and electronic health records create new ethical challenges unaddressed by our traditional methods of going about business.

In this training we will focus not only on discussing those problems and their solutions, but also on understanding what the solutions mean. You probably know that encryption is important for protecting confidential information, but are you familiar with what encryption is and how it works? We will discuss that. We will also explore several communications mediums and their typical uses, the ways in which our lives and client lives collide online, and a number of often-overlooked (but achievable!) aspects of HIPAA compliance.

This workshop is presented by Roy Huggins, MS NCC, a counselor in private practice who also directs Person-Centered Tech. Roy worked as a professional Web developer for 7 years before changing paths, and makes it his mission to grow helpers’ understanding of the Internet and other electronic communications mediums for the future of our practices and our professions. Roy also acts as Technology Chair for the Oregon Counseling Association. He routinely teaches a course for health professionals on creating and promoting a professional website and consults with mental health colleagues on ethical and practical issues surrounding tech in clinical practice.
